Winchester police appeal for witnesses following serious assault

Winchester police have issued an appeal for witnesses following a serious assault that took place on Southgate Street in the early hours of Sunday (29 January).

The victim, a man in his teens, suffered a serious injury to his jaw in the incident, which occurred just after midnight near to the Regimental Museum. A 24 year old man from Winchester was arrested on grievous bodily harm with intent and has since been released on bail while enquiries continue.

Despite extensive enquiries over the past few weeks, police are now appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the assault to come forward. Detective Sergeant John Smith, who is leading the investigation, said:

“We are continuing to investigate this serious assault and have been conducting enquiries in the area to gather as much information as possible. However, we believe that there may be witnesses who have not yet come forward and we would urge them to do so.

“If you were in the vicinity of Southgate Street on the night of the assault and saw anything suspicious, no matter how insignificant it may seem, please get in touch. Any information you have could be crucial to our investigation.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting the reference 44230038343. Alternatively, they can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
