Southampton’s Outdoor Sports Centre Set for Multi-Million-Pound Transformation

Morgan Sindall has been appointed as the contractor for the ambitious redevelopment of Southampton’s Outdoor Sports Centre, following the recent approval of the planning application. The £30 million project, slated to begin late summer 2024, aims to revitalise the popular sports venue, providing state-of-the-art facilities and fostering community well-being.

The improvements, funded in part by a successful £20 million bid for levelling up funding from the central government, signify a significant step towards the regeneration of Southampton’s primary outdoor sports venue. The project encompasses various enhancements, including a Community Hub with changing and refreshment facilities, a gym, and an indoor tennis/netball hall. Additionally, a new Alpine Snowsports Centre, Family Zone, Athletics Clubhouse, grandstand, woodland car park, all-weather floodlit football pitches, and upgrades to cricket and hockey pitches are part of the comprehensive plan.

While the works are anticipated to cause some disruption during 2024, the Outdoor Sports Centre will remain open, allowing the public to enjoy the facilities throughout the transformation.

Councillor Kaur, Leader of Southampton City Council, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership with Morgan Sindall, emphasising the proven track record of successful project delivery and social impact. The regeneration plans, in collaboration with central government funding, aim to position Southampton on the map as a hub for sports and recreation, with facilities capable of hosting regional and national competitions.

“It will significantly help improve health inequalities often felt by our most deprived communities, and create many new jobs and opportunities for local people,” stated Councillor Kaur.

Cliff Kinch, Area Director for Morgan Sindall, echoed the excitement, highlighting the company’s pride in contributing to the health and well-being of Southampton’s residents. Drawing parallels with the success of the St Mark’s School project, Kinch expressed anticipation in delivering an inclusive, outstanding asset that will benefit the community for years to come.

The transformation of Southampton’s Outdoor Sports Centre signifies not only a physical upgrade to facilities but also a commitment to fostering community engagement, promoting health, and creating opportunities for the city’s residents. As the project gains momentum, Southampton looks set to emerge as a prominent destination for sports and recreation on a regional and national scale.
