Man assaulted trying to stop theft

Police have put out an appeal for witnesses or information relating to incidents that took place yesterday evening, 16 March.

The first incident occurred in Endle Street, just on the city side of Itchen Bridge. A witness saw three males in a white car. They pulled up outside a car repair shop and proceeded to attempt to take the bumper off an MCC Smart car.

The witness, in his 30s, tried to intervene, but was assaulted in the process. He was left with a wound to his neck and received hospital treatment.

The men didn’t end up taking anything from the car, but fled the scene leaving it with damage. They are said to have been wearing balaclavas and gloves.

Further to that, police have also confirmed that catalic converters were taken from 2 vehicles in Floating Bridge Road at around 9:30-10pm last night too. It’s thought the incidents are related.

If you can help with any information, please call 101, quoting 4422015899.

On their social media appeal, a spokesperson said;

“Hybrid vehicles are most commonly targeted, as their metals are more valuable, but any vehicle can be at risk of catalytic converter theft.

To keep yours safe, register your converter and mark it with a forensic marker, which will make it harder for thieves to dispose of.
