Major Pedestrian and Cycling Improvements to Take Place at Cranbury Road/Station Road Junction

In a further move towards enhancing pedestrian and cycling safety, the city of Southampton is set to embark on a transformative project at the Cranbury Road/Station Road junction. The project, which is part of the Eastern Quietway initiative, aims to create a safer and more accessible environment for residents and commuters.

What to Expect:

The project, scheduled to commence on Monday, 02 October, 2023, is anticipated to last approximately six weeks, with work being conducted on weekdays from 7:00am to 5:30pm. The scheme will encompass several phases, each addressing specific aspects of the junction’s infrastructure.

Phase 1: Junction Closure and Zebra Crossing

During this phase, the Cranbury Road/Station Road junction will be closed for the duration of the works, with diversion routes in place for access to Station Road. Pedestrian access will be maintained, utilising temporary footways on the northern side or the southern footway. Notably, access to Sholing Railway Station will always be maintained. Temporary two-way traffic lights on Station Road, between Spring Road and Porchester Road, will guide traffic around the closure area.

Phase 2: Additional Closure and Island Enhancements

Phase 2 will see the continuation of Phase 1 restrictions with an additional closure at the junction of Porchester Road and Station Road. This closure is necessary for works on the existing island. Motorists can use the diversion route via Portsmouth Road to access Station Road. The duration of these works will be approximately 7 days.

Phase 3: Full Closures for Resurfacing

Towards the project’s conclusion, Phase 3 will involve full closures on Station Road between Portsmouth Road and Spring Road, as well as at the Cranbury Road junction. These closures are essential for resurfacing this section. To minimise disruption, these works will take place between 8:00pm and 6:00am. Dates for Phase 3 works will be advertised in advance on yellow ‘advanced warning’ signs in the area.

Project Goals and Benefits:

The Cranbury Road/Station Road Junction project has a multifaceted approach to improving the area. It will deliver various traffic calming measures, enhanced safety features, zebra crossings, and dropped kerbs. Furthermore, this initiative aims to promote pedestrian and cycling accessibility, providing a designated route between Miller’s Pond and the Itchen Bridge. This alternative to Portsmouth Road is set to benefit both cyclists and pedestrians in the area.

Apology for Inconvenience:

It’s important to note that properties close to the carriageway may experience temporary disturbances due to the nature of the work, including noise, flashing lights, and reversing sirens. The project organisers have issued an advance apology for any inconvenience or disruption this may cause.
