Major blaze under control, road closures lifted

A major fire that erupted early this morning at a commercial garage on Bitterne Road West, Southampton, is now under control, according to the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire & Rescue Service.

The fire, which began around 5:05am, prompted a massive response from emergency services. At its peak, more than 80 firefighters and 11 fire engines, along with two aerial ladder platforms and other specialist vehicles, were on the scene battling the blaze. The fire spread to adjacent buildings, causing extensive damage and heavy smoke in the area.

By 7:00am, residents were advised to keep their windows and doors closed to avoid the smoke. Hampshire Police assisted with road closures on Bitterne Road West, Quayside Road, Hawkeswood Road, and Athelstan Road to facilitate the movement of emergency vehicles.

At 10:40am, the fire was reported to have involved multiple vehicles within the garage, with emergency services working tirelessly to contain it and prevent further spread. Relief crews took over, reducing the number of fire engines on-site to eight.

By 12:35pm, the situation had improved significantly, allowing the response to be scaled down to three fire engines and one aerial ladder platform. Firefighters are expected to remain on-site throughout the day to damp down hotspots and ensure the area is safe.

As of 2:20pm, the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire & Rescue Service announced that the fire was under control, and cordons and road closures were lifted.

Residents and motorists are thanked for their patience and cooperation during this emergency response.
