Impacted by fly tipping? Will these measures work?

The subject of fly-tipping causes debates across many a community. However, Southampton City Council are keen to try and tackle it, and have relatively new measures in place; it may not eradicate it altogether, but something has to be better than nothing.

SCC have introduced mobile CCTV units, which are solar powered. So far, three have been trialled with the success rate being positive in fly tipping ‘hotspots’.

Fixed penalty notices of £400 can also now be issued to those found responsible for dumping rubbish illegally. For larger scale fly tipping, the council has also said that they will pursue matters with a view to having larger fines imposed, or even prison sentences handed out.

The mobile units can be moved easily from location to location. This will allow the council greater flexibility in their attempts to reduce the number of offences taking place.

Via an online statement, Councillor Toqeer Kataria, said;

“We’re urging everyone to dispose of their rubbish in an environmentally friendly and socially responsible way. Loving where you live and showing pride in your community costs nothing, but the council having to clear up fly tips costs everyone money. Please do the right thing and dispose of unwanted items in a conscientious way.

“The council is taking a proactive approach to catch, fine or prosecute those that fly tip. There have been positive results since the deployment of the mobile solar powered CCTV units, targeting hot spots. You can report a fly tip for clearance and provide information to help us catch fly tippers on our website.”
