Free summer sports and play day at Hoglands Park

The Junior Neighbourhood Wardens are set to host the city’s annual Summer Play Day with a fresh sports day theme. The free event is scheduled for this Friday, 26 July, at Hoglands Park in the city centre from 10am to 2pm. Children and young people are invited to participate in a variety of sports, including football and tennis, offering a great opportunity to try out new activities, have fun, and stay active. No advance booking is required—attendees can simply join on the day.

In addition to sports, the event promises an array of free, fun games and activities for the entire family, plus a bouncy castle. Refreshments and face painting will be available for a small charge.

The Southampton Play Day has been a cherished summer fixture at Hoglands Park for the past decade. This year, for the first time, the event will be managed by the council’s Junior Neighbourhood Wardens.

The sports day is part of a busy calendar of fun activities and community projects run by the Junior Neighbourhood Wardens. Their initiatives include gardening, litter picking, fundraising, and creative projects like creating murals and mosaics. The Junior Neighbourhood Warden programme, open to children aged 7-12, has also paved the way for older participants (13-18) to become Team Leaders. These leaders continue their involvement by mentoring younger children, imparting skills and knowledge.

The programme offers children the chance to make new friends, learn new skills, build self-confidence, and become positive role models in their communities. Participants receive a free membership card that provides access to exclusive benefits and discounts, including £1 swim, £1 gym, £5 kayaking, and £5 Ringo sessions, all courtesy of Active Nation.
