Family distraught after grave top stolen from cemetery

Can you help?

It’s great when we can share the positive and community spirited successes, but equally, we think it’s necessary to ask for help when something goes morally wrong.

On this occasion, on behalf of a family, we are appealing for help to identify those responsible for a theft of the lowest kind. If you can help in any way, we know that it will at least bring some comfort to the family concerned.

Some time between Thursday 21 July and Monday of this week, 1 August, a most disgusting theft took place; this occurred at Eastleigh Cemetery, off of Leigh Road.

As you’ll see from the images, the granite top from a grave was taken. Needless to say, this has left the family of the deceased distraught.

For those unaware, granite is extremely heavy. Therefore, multiple people will have been involved in this inexcusable theft; a large vehicle would also have been required.

Attempts to check ring doorbell footage from the cemetery office have been unsuccessful. Therefore, an appeal is being made to the public to try and get more information, and ultimately find those responsible.

If you live in and around the area and can spend time checking any available footage for the period in question, it would be very welcome. Any useful information should be passed to the police online, or by calling 101. The crime reference number to quote is 44220311491.

When we report news, we have to do so in a way that appeals to those that read stories. We can have opinions, but it’s important that we allow readers to share theirs at the same time.

Our thoughts are naturally with the family and we hope those responsible are caught and handled correctly.
