Arson at children’s playground – four arrested

If you live around the area of Sullivan Road Rec in Sholing, or if you were out and about late yesterday evening, you may be able assist police with their investigation into an arson incident.

Late last night (actually 00:15 today, 24 January), police were called to the park area. The fire service was on hand putting out a motorcycle fire, which was started by a group of youths.

The same group are also said to have ripped off fence panels, together with parts of the play park before then setting it all alight with petrol; no doubt this will impact on the use of the park, which will be upsetting to many.

On attending the scene, police arrested four males on suspicion of arson. Of the four, three were 15 years old and one was a 20 year old.

One of the 15 year old lads was also arrested on suspicion of possessing a blade; a lock knife. Further, the 20 year old was found to be carrying a small amount of cannabis, which was seized. All four were taken into custody, where they remain at the time of writing.

Via a statement made available online, Inspector Stuart Baker from the Southampton East Neighbourhoods Policing Team said;

“Hopefully the swift action we have taken with this incident shows we will not tolerate behaviour like this.

“Officers will be patrolling the area and if you have any concerns please speak to them.

“If you saw what happened, were in the area at the time and noticed something which could aid our investigation or have mobile, dash cam or ring doorbell footage which could help our enquiries then we want to hear from you.”
