Arrest Made After String of Suspicious Incidents in Portswood

In response to multiple reports of a man acting suspiciously in the Portswood area of Southampton, officers have made a significant breakthrough. Today, Wednesday, 15 November, a 31 year old man was arrested in London on suspicion of aggravated burglary.

The investigation was prompted by three sightings overnight on Monday, 13 November, into Tuesday, 14 November, of an individual exhibiting suspicious behaviour. As enquiries progressed, the police became aware of an additional three incidents on Monday, 13 November, and five incidents reported to have occurred between Thursday, 9 November, and Saturday, 11 November.

One of the reported incidents involved an aggravated burglary on Friday morning. At approximately 8:40am, a man attempted to gain entry to a property on Shakespeare Avenue, threatening two women in their 20s with a pair of scissors. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Southampton Chief Inspector Chris Douglas addressed the community’s concerns, stating, “We understand how concerned local residents are about these incidents and are aware of speculation circulating on social media. We want you to know that we are carrying out a thorough investigation and would like to reiterate that we have had no reports of anybody being injured as a result of these incidents.”

He urged the public to refrain from speculation on social media and encouraged them to report any concerns or information to the police. A heightened police presence in Portswood is expected as the investigation continues, and officers will be available to speak to local residents.

Chief Inspector Douglas concluded, “We will maintain high visibility patrols in the affected areas for reassurance, and our officers will be more than happy to speak to anyone with concerns.”
